World Hunger Day is an initiative by The Hunger Project that takes place May 28th annually. Started in 2011, it aims to celebrate sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty.
More than 815 million people in the world do not have enough food.
8 million of these people live in the UK.
Following this worldwide campaign, we wanted to play our part for our local community and give back to the people of Walsall.
We are pledging to support our local food bank ‘Walsall North Food Bank’ to provide emergency food and necessities for people suffering from food shortage and poverty.
Throughout the month of May we will have a ‘food drop off point’ located on our Grand Mezzanine on the second floor, where diners, passers-by, our neighbours and of course staff can donate items of food to be donated to our chosen food bank.
A little bit about Walsall North Food Bank…
Walsall North Foodbank is situated in Pelsall, at Pelsall Methodist Church. It first opened its doors in September 2014, and since then has helped local families and individuals in and around the WS3 postcode area.
The foodbank is a project founded by local churches and community groups, working together towards stopping hunger in the local area.
Food banks partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers and police to identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher.
Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.
